Clipboard and teams

The clipboard page is Clipline in the browser: paste or drop something on one computer, copy or download it on another. The header says whose clipboard you see: "Clipboard of" your current team, or the session you are in.

Add text

Paste or type into the box under Add to the clipboard and click Add text – or press Ctrl+Enter. Above the box it says where the entry goes (your team or the session) and that it stays 15 minutes.

You don't have to click into the box first: Ctrl+V anywhere on the page puts the text into it.

Add files

  • Drop them anywhere on the page. While you drag, the window turns blue and says where the files go.
  • Choose files opens the file picker; you can pick several at once.
  • Paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V – it is uploaded as an image.

A bar shows the progress, and the files appear in the list one by one. Files can be up to 12 MB.

Use an entry

Each entry has one main button:

Entry Main button Also
Text Copy – it says "Copied" when it worked Eye: show it large
File Download Images show a small preview

The trash can deletes the entry for everyone, after asking. Below each entry you see who added it, when, and how long it stays ("Disappears in 12 minutes"). Long text is shortened; Show all expands it.

Show large

The eye icon opens the text large in the middle of the browser window – for reading it off the screen and typing it on another machine. Characters that look alike in codes and passwords (0 O, 1 l I) get a small label, and spaces are shown as ␣. Close it with Close, Esc or a click next to it.

Only me

Choose Only me under For before you add something, and only you will see it – in the browser and in all your clients. Use it for passwords and tokens you move between your own machines. In a session, too, an entry marked Only me stays with you: the others in the session don't get it. In the list these entries are hidden behind dots: Copy works without showing them, Reveal shows them.

Burn after reading

Tick Burn after reading before you add a text, and the first copy deletes it: Copy on this page, Copy in a tray app, clipline pull or fetching it with curl. Use it to hand a password or a token to someone without it sitting in the list for 15 minutes.

  • Nobody sees the text before it is copied, not even you: the list shows 🔥 ••••••••, without Reveal or the eye.
  • The first copy counts, whoever makes it – also your own. If two people click at the same time, only one gets the text; the other sees "Already copied by someone else".
  • Text only. Files can't be burned after reading.
  • Nobody copied it? It is deleted after 15 minutes like any other entry.
  • If the browser can't write to the clipboard (on plain http, for example), the text opens large once, so you can still copy it by hand – it is already deleted on the server.
  • Older tray apps and CLIs show 🔥 Burn after reading – update Clipline to copy it instead of the text. Update them to copy these entries.

Send to a person

Choose someone under For (below the text box), and only that person and you see the entry – the rest of the team doesn't, and doesn't notice that anything was sent. You can choose anyone who is in one of your teams; the button then says Add for Anna Berger.

  • The entry is marked ✉ Anna Berger → you for the recipient and ✉ you → Ben Köhler for you, whatever team is current.
  • It works for text and files, and together with Burn after reading: a secret for exactly one person, gone after the first copy.
  • The recipient's tray app shows a notification ("✉ Anna Berger sent you"). Both of you can delete it; otherwise it is gone after 15 minutes like any other entry.
  • For keeps your choice until you reload the page, and the button always says who gets the next entry.
  • Not in a session: a session has no people to choose from, only everyone or Only me.
  • The tray apps have the same choice under Send to; in the terminal it's clipline push --to anna (see Terminal tool).

Teams

Each entry belongs to a team, and everyone in the team sees it. Your account starts with a personal team that only you are in.

  • Switch team: use the team menu at the top right. New entries go to the team selected there.
  • Create a team: team menu → Create New Team.
  • Invite people: team menu → Team Settings, then add their email address.

The clients show entries from all your teams and can send to any of them; see Windows, macOS, Linux and the terminal tool.

How long entries stay

15 minutes, for text and files alike. After that they are deleted from the server. The clipboard is for handing things over, not for keeping them.
