The tray menu sends your clipboard and lists the recent entries; notifications work like on Windows.

Install

Download the Linux desktop package from Downloads and install it:

sudo apt install ./clipline-tray_*_all.deb

Then start Clipline from your application menu. It starts by itself at every login from then on.

On KDE Plasma the icon appears in the system tray right away. GNOME needs the AppIndicator extension, which Ubuntu already includes; on other GNOME systems install gnome-shell-extension-appindicator.

Connect

On first start a window asks for:

  • Server URL: https://clipline.roedlach.tirol
  • API token: create one under API Tokens with read and create.
  • Check every (seconds): how often it looks for new entries.

Change them later under Settings… in the tray menu.

Notifications

New entries show who added them, the team and a preview of the text. Copy puts it on your clipboard; for files it downloads them. Clicking the notification opens Clipline in your browser. Entries you sent from this computer don't notify you. A burn-after-reading entry shows no preview: Copy fetches it once and deletes it for everyone.

Send your clipboard

  • Middle-click the tray icon to send your clipboard: text, an image, or files you copied in the file manager.
  • Send clipboard and Send files… do the same from the menu.
  • Send as sends once in a special way: Clipboard – only me and Files – only me… are visible only to you; Clipboard – burn after reading (text only) is deleted by the first copy, by anyone.
  • Send to chooses the team, or one person of your teams: only the two of you see what you send then (Send to a person), and the menu says Send clipboard → Anna Berger.

Pause and mute

Notifications pauses for 30 minutes, an hour, four hours, until tomorrow 8:00 or until you resume. Untick a team under Notify for: to stop hearing about it.

Recent entries

Recent entries lists what's on the clipboard now; click one to copy it.

Updates

Once a day the app asks the server whether a newer version is available. If there is one, a notification offers Install, Later or Skip this version; Check for updates… in the menu checks right away. Nothing is installed until you click Install, and the download is checked against the server's checksum before it runs. To stop the daily check, untick Check for updates automatically in Settings….

Install downloads the new package and installs it with apt, which asks for your password; the tray app then restarts. If you run the tray app from the zip download instead of the package, the notification links to the download page.

The clipline terminal tool points out a newer version once a day, only in an interactive terminal, never in scripts or pipes. CLIPLINE_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 turns that off.

Remove

sudo apt remove clipline-tray

Your settings stay in ~/.config/clipline/.
